Passing on passion from one generation to another
Animation Club (SFI High School)
Despite rapid technological advancements, hand-drawn animation still holds a magic that AI cannot replicate. Now, more than ever, the world is in danger of losing one of its favorite storytelling mediums: the infinite world of hand-drawn animation, limited only by one’s imagination.
Course:
Animation Club
Year:
2024/25 school year
Objective:
SF International is a small school that offers a unique program designed for recently-immigrated students who have attended school in the United States for four years or less. My goal was to recruit, develop, and implement a curriculum centered around animation to ensure a holistic education outside of books.
The students at SFI High School are budding storytellers with few tools to express themselves. Seeing this, I decided to introduce them to animation as a storytelling medium through a simple, accessible course that equipped them with basic animation skills.
Program:
Procreate
Location:
San Francisco International High School
Process:
The course I developed introduced the students to various forms of art and storytelling, including painting, linoleum printmaking, and photography. To conduct the course, I made use of the iPads and Apple pencils available onsite, and created a structured guide for students on how to use the animation canvas on the procreate app.
“Teach them to connect and they will protect”
—ExCEL STEAM Sessions
Students were constantly amazed by the things you can do on an iPad and they had fun experimenting and seeing what they can do themselves. This proved to me that this hands-on teaching was the most engaging way to educate the students on this unique storytelling medium with a rich legacy.
